There are many vendor specific products that allow you to view your network and see who does what, but this generally means that you have to upgrade all of your existing patching infrastructure, all of which comes at a premium and incidentally, the existing equipment still has a 20 year warranty attached to it, that the vendor convinced you would be a good investment.
Or you can go the whole hog and get a proprietary DCIM product that can tell you how things are connected together and how much power you are using at what time of day and how cool it is by the cabinet by the door, which is all very well in certain circumstances.
The SolutionWe personally advocate a much simpler solution, which enables and documents legacy equipment, be it passive or active and allows the customer to view and interrogate their network with proven software systems. Our system will automate MS Visio diagrams for floor plans, rack layouts and network diagrams, saving massive amounts of time.
It will produce excel spreadsheets with patching schedules to assist technicians with installation and maintenance. It will manage assets and audit trails and will assist in producing accurate maintenance schedules. All of the MS Visio diagrams allow for interrogation of devices and how they interconnect within the network. All of which may be done from a web browser.
